Ultrafast Magnetism

Virtual Journal of Ultrafast Science

The application of an ultrashort laser pulse on a ferromagnetic film allows changing its magnetization in the femtosecond time range. This scientifically fascinating effect has also technological implications, e.g., regarding the ultimate speed at which information can be stored and processed in magnetic media. The study of ultrafast demagnetization is concerned with unraveling the mechanisms of transfer of energy and angular momentum between the electron, spin and phonon degrees of freedom in a magnetically ordered solid. In particular, the dynamics of the processes towards establishing equilibrium between these baths after optical pumping of the electronic system has been of great interest to study to understand dynamics of solid state systems. Micromagnetic picture of the systems becomes important to understand any change in spatial magnetic structure following the laser excitation.
